Look at glyphosate dispassionately

July 23, 2017 at 5:02 pm

The grapevine whispered to me that at a recent meeting in Parliament, when the Minister of Plantation Industries was presenting his case for lifting the current ban on glyphosate, you had remarked that this weed killer is a ‘poison’ and the ban should not be lifted.

What does Trump know about Panama?

July 23, 2017 at 5:00 pm

On receiving Panama’s President, Juan Carlo Varela, in the White House, US President Donald Trump boasted about the construction of the Panama Canal. He said ‘The Panama Canal is doing quite well. I think we did a good job building it, right – a very good job’. Turning to Varela, Trump asked ‘Right?’ Varela responded with a sarcastic smile ‘Yeah, about 100 years ago!’ Trump: ‘Things are going well in Panama.’ If that is all Trump knew about Panama and the Panama Canal, I guess Pakistanis are better informed about Panama, although they are thousands of miles away from that country, which links South and Central America; thanks to the Pakistani dailies, which hardly miss a news item on Panama.

Dr. Fernando should have thanked MR

July 23, 2017 at 4:58 pm

The Neville Fernando private hospital was ceremonially handed over to the Government on the 17th of July 2017. Dr. Neville Fernando, as the proprietor, in his thanks at the large and distinguished gathering made special reference to Minister Lakshman Kiriella and Minister S.B Disanayake. The former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, who was not present at this ceremony, is known to have helped Dr. Fernando in no uncertain means, by facilitating to obtain a huge loan to the tune of Rs. 3000 million. Why Dr. Fernando failed to thank Mahinda Rajapaksa, even in absentia, beats anyone’s comprehension.

Chengdu The home of the Giant Panda

July 23, 2017 at 4:48 pm

For the last few years, I have been inquiring from several travel agents in China specialising in Safaris of the possibility of organising a tour for me to see the Giant Panda in the wild. But, most of them responded negatively since the chance of seeing them in the wild were very low. Their natural habitat is mostly above 1,500 metres elevation in mountainous forest terrain mainly in the Sichuan Province, while few are found in neighbouring Shaanxi and Gansu. These areas are reachable only on foot. The Giant Panda’s favourite food is bamboo, which is also abundant in those areas. In 2016, I found an organisation based in Colorado, US named, Natural Habitat Adventures (NHA), which organises tours of the wild side of China, mainly focused on the Giant Panda.
