An aggrieved person went to the Supreme Court on this matter and the court, headed by then Chief Justice Sarath. N. Silva, ruled in favor of the petitioner. The result was that the Consumer Affairs Authority was directed to inform supermarkets within a week that they cannot charge for these bags.
