It is almost over.

The mood in Congress is still nervous and anxious, but there is a general assumption that before the day is out they will vote to lift the debt ceiling and reopen the government.

I’m still waiting to hear more from Republicans in the House.

The CBI decision to include Birla as an accused at the FIR stage is not correct, said senior advocate CS Vaidyanathan.
NEW DELHI: Legal experts critiqued the  CBI decision to name  Aditya Birla Group chairman  Kumar Mangalam Birla in its latest  FIR in the coal block allocation case. Prominent lawyers familiar with both investigative protocols and corporate structures told ET naming Birla at this stage makes little sense. “At the FIR stage, the link is rather far-fetched,” said senior lawyer Arvind P Dattar. “The CBI seems to have randomly included every other person in the FIR.

Jumbos punching Packer

October 15, 2013, 12:00 pm

The press has recently carried pictures of government  politicians fawning over Australian Casino tycoon, James Packer, who was here  last week. They went out of their way to make him feel important for obvious  reasons.

Pictures showed a happy Packer flashing a thousand watt smile.  However, UNP MP Dr. Harsha de Silva has claimed that the Opposition was able to  make him return empty-handed by blocking a government move to rush legislation  through Parliament to grant his casino to be set up here a tax holiday.

A clarification on ‘Land Powers’ and related matters – a comment

The reader of Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka’s ‘Disinformation,  Devolution and the Presidency’ (Midweek Review of 2 October 2013) has  ample reason to wonder whether the caption refers to the doctor’s own  disinformation or to what he has attributed to others. I am not concerned with  the mildly amusing autobiographic trivia with which Dr. DJ often finds it  necessary to embellish what he has to say on genuinely important issues. My  focus here is on his observations on the recent Supreme Court clarification of  the limits of the powers over ‘Land’ vested on Provincial Councils through the  13th Amendment to the Constitution, and on the links he has tried to establish  between the resurgence of the Tamil National Alliance (a potentially  secessionist political force backed by India) and prevarication on the part of  the government of Sri Lanka he perceives in implementing to the fullest the  provisions for devolution of power to the Provincial Councils.

Chairman, fellow members of the Northern Provincial Council,  persons of learning and of standing seated on the dais, my dear brothers and  sisters,

Some of us gathered here, were earlier candidates. Today we are  meeting as members of the Council. A majority of the candidates changed into  members. Yet a few are left out. But it does not imply that in the service of  the people they are not wanted. On this occasion I only want to say that their  services are needed.

Artificial off-shore Island – criminal waste

October 15, 2013 at 10:22 pm

October 15, 2013, 7:22 pm

The Sunday Island of 29/09 reports that the govt.  has decided to build a forty acre off-shore island of sand at Hambantota at a  cost of US$808 million taken as a loan from the EXIM Bank of China.

Mattala Airport and the Hambantota port have not functioned as  expected and paid the expected dividends but they will remain there physically.  But in the case of an offshore island made of sand nothing will remain in case  of a tsunami like the one that took place on the 2004 Boxing Day. That will be a  disaster and US$ 808 million plus will be washed away!

Packer sent packing – Three hearty cheers!

October 15, 2013, 7:19 pm

Three hearty cheers is totally inadequate to celebrate and thank  the Joint Opposition who “foiled the government’s attempt to smuggle it though  on October 8;” it being the Gazette giving Packer a bumper tax holiday for his  Casino. The government had tried to push it through. Opposition MPs had not been  provided copies of the said Gazette and thus James Packer going back to  Australia with no assurance of a ten year tax holiday and then a mere six  percent tax for the following 12 years.
