The JVP-led NPP has decided to launch a series of protests from 08 June to pressure the government to hold the local government elections. The first protest will be held opposite the Elections Secretariat, Colombo, with the participation of all NPP members nominated to contest the local government polls which have been postponed indefinitely.

JVP and NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, MP, addressing a rally in Balapitiya, on Saturday, said: “We’ll protest opposite the Elections Secretariat and then we’ll hold three more rallies in Hambantota, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. We’ll lead people in a final protest in Colombo. We are ready to bring the city under siege.”

“People should have been allowed to elect their representatives to the local councils in March. They know that this country cannot move forward with the same corrupt rulers at the helm. The people want to chase these rouges away at an election. Now, we are convinced that this government will not hold elections. Time has come for us to fight for our right to vote.
