Chief Opposition Whip and Kandy District SJB MP Lakshman Kiriella on Wednesday requested the judiciary to help cleanse the prevailing political culture by preventing MPs switching alliances for money.

Kiriella said that unless MPs abandoned the practice of crossing over for ministerial posts and other gains, people would tar all lawmakers with the same brush and blame the judiciary as well

“The Minister of Justice spoke of the need to reform election laws. If there were a genuine need to amend the election laws that could have been done when the 20th and 21st Amendments to the Constitution were passed. Now, it is in a mighty hurry to amend the election laws not because there is a need but to put off the elections further,” Kiriella said.
