Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe yesterday said that Sri Lanka had successfully built up its foreign reserves, surpassing the targets set by the IMF.

Interacting with newspaper editors, Dr. Weerasinghe said that Sri Lanka’s foreign reserves had now reached approximately USD 6.5 billion.

In answer to a question from an editor, Dr. Weerasinghe said as the economy stabilised, vehicle imports had to resume. Care would be taken to ensure that they would not adversely impact the country’s foreign reserves, he added.

Dr. Weerasinghe said that vehicle imports could be controlled through appropriate fiscal policies.
