Colombo, February 28 (Daily Mirror) – In the wake of revenge killings triggered by the murder of notorious underworld criminal ‘Ganemulla Sanjeewa,’ police have gone on alert and launched special operations across the country to pre-empt such counter criminal attacks involving underworld groups, the Daily Mirror learns.
A senior officer said that the Acting IGP had directed all senior police officers and the OIC of all police stations to conduct special operations targeting criminals in order to avoid retaliatory killings following Ganemulla Sanjeewa’s murder.
However, the senior officer said that due to limited manpower and other responsibilities, there was a challenge in tightening security in all areas but preventing underworld activities remained a top priority for the police, especially in light of recent shootings linked to underworld groups.
The officer said that special attention will be given to the Western and Southern Provinces, which are the most active regions for these criminal gangs.
It was reported that the police had received information that ‘Ganemulla Sanjeewa’s group is planning to launch a counterattack against underworld figures who are closely associated with a notorious gang leader known as ‘Kehelbaddara Padme’, following Sanjeewa’s murder at the Colombo Hulftsdorp Magistrate’s Court last week.
Police suspect that ‘Kehelbaddara Padme’ orchestrated the murder of ‘Ganemulla Sanjeewa.’
On Wednesday, a person was injured following a shooting in Minuwangoda. It is reported that the injured person is a classmate of “Kehelbaddara Padme,” and the shooting was carried out in revenge for the murder of Ganemulla Sanjeewa. Meanwhile, the Pannala Police have also arrested two people who were videotaping the house of Kehelbaddara Padme’s wife. The police reportedly have also taken into custody the mobile phone used to record the video along with the two suspects.
Following the murder of Sanjeewa, Sanjeewa’s associates reportedly shared posts on social media stating that they would avenge the death of Ganemulla Sanjeewa.
The senior officer said that following Ganemulla Sanjeewa’s murder, much information has surfaced about underworld activities and the groups linked to them.
Last week, Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasooriya said the police have identified 58 gangs engaged in organized crimes and that 1,400 of their associates have also been identified across the country.
According to police, at least 12 shooting incidents have been reported across the country so far this year, with many believed to be the work of organized crime groups.
Meanwhile, in response to the former military personnel linked to underworld activities, the Defence Ministry has issued orders for the immediate arrest of all armed forces deserters.
This directive comes in response to a troubling increase in shooting incidents linked to former military personnel who have abandoned their posts.
