Colombo, April 17 (Daily Mirror) – The Department of Meteorology has issued a warm weather advisory for several provinces across Sri Lanka, warning that the heat index is expected to reach the ‘Caution Level’ in many areas today (18).

The advisory applies to residents in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, Western, Southern, and Eastern provinces, as well as the Ratnapura and Monaragala districts.

According to the Met. Department, the heat index — which reflects the temperature felt by the human body based on a combination of relative humidity and maximum temperature — is forecast to rise significantly, potentially posing health risks.

“This is the condition that is felt on your body,” the department noted, emphasizing that prolonged sun exposure and outdoor activity could lead to fatigue and even heat cramps if not managed carefully.

Authorities are urging the public to stay well-hydrated and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day to minimize the risk of heat-related illnesses.
