JJB goes ahead with protest despite court orders

The JVP-led Jathika Jana Balawegaya (JJB) on Monday (31) went ahead with a protest near the Fort Railway Station against the government’s controversial debt-restructuring plan. It defied prohibiting orders issued by the Fort and Maligakanda Magistrates.

Orders were issued following submission made by the police. The Fort Magistrate prohibited protests participated by JVP-leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake and its Secretary Tilvin Silva and others from staging demonstrations within several area in Colombo. Accordingly, the order was to prevent holding of demonstrations in the relevant areas from 12.00 noon to 06.00 p.m.

The Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court had issued an order preventing the Convenor of the Inter-Company Employees’ Union Wasantha Samarasinghe and others from holding any demonstrations and protest marches and blocking roads and pavements causing inconvenience to the general public.
